Optometry FAQs

Common questions about optometric services at KCS

Do I need a referral for an eye exam?
Yes. Eye care at KCS starts with a referral from one of our providers. To get started, you can see a KCS primary care provider, who can refer you for an eye exam. This is especially important when your eye care is tied to a health condition like diabetes. If you are not a KCS patient yet, call us at 714-503-6550 and we will help you get started.
What eye care services do you offer?

We offer complete eye exams for adults and children. This includes vision testing, prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses, and checks for common eye problems such as glaucoma, cataracts, and dry eye. We also look for eye changes linked to diabetes and high blood pressure.

Where do you offer eye care?

Eye exams are offered at our Lincoln location. Call us at 714-503-6550 and we will help you schedule.

Do you sell glasses or contacts?

We do not sell glasses or contacts at this time. After your exam, you will get your prescription along with a list of trusted and affordable places where you can fill it. Our team is happy to help you understand your options.

I have diabetes. Should I get my eyes checked?

Yes. Diabetes can affect your eyes before you notice any change in your vision. A yearly diabetic eye exam helps catch problems early, when they are easier to treat. Let us know you have diabetes when you schedule so we can plan the right exam for you.

What should I bring to my eye exam?

Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and your current glasses or contacts. If you take any medications, bring a list. It also helps to bring sunglasses, since your eyes may be sensitive to light after the visit.

What happens during an eye exam?

Your optometrist checks how well you see and looks at the health of your eyes. Some exams include eye drops that widen your pupils so the doctor can see the back of your eye clearly. Most visits take about 30 to 60 minutes.

Will my eyes be dilated, and can I drive afterward?

Sometimes. If your eyes are dilated, your vision may be blurry and sensitive to light for a few hours. We suggest bringing sunglasses and, if you can, having someone drive you home.

How often should I have an eye exam?

For most adults, once every one to two years is a good rule. You may need to come in more often if you have diabetes, wear contacts, or have an eye condition your doctor is watching. We will let you know what is right for you.
